Driven by their purpose of safeguarding life, property and the environment, DNV GL enables organizations to advance the safety and sustainability of their business. They provide classification and technical assurance along with software and independent expert advisory services to the maritime, oil and gas, and energy industries. Operating in more than 100 countries, 15,000 professionals are dedicated to helping customers make the world safer, smarter and greener
SYNQ provided their flexible and scalable video API, that was easy for DNV GL to implement in their current legacy systems. An important aspect was that DNV GL needed to have full control over the written code to be able to scale up operations and make customized changes, based on current and future demands.
As for many big companies, DNV GL is going through a digital transformation, and their operating platform is rapidly evolving. It is not easy to navigate the IT supplier jungle, especially finding products that are compatible with existing business workflows and that could strengthen the current tech infrastructure. If you ever do find a match, you will probably end up spending a lot of time on custom integrations, battling rigid data structures and paying for premium tiered pricing.
DNV GL wanted to explore and enrich their existing mobile applications by implementing video handling capabilities. The aim was to let users easily attach videos to their support requests, right in the application. This to improve their support offering, resulting in a better customer experience. DNV GL was looking for an agile software development process, with the support for quick prototyping and to validate the capabilities of the SYNQ video API. This included uploading, storing, adding custom meta-data, transcoding, and playing back videos on all platforms and screen sizes.
DNV GL and SYNQ participants at the hackathon event.
To secure a safe testing and implementation environment, we arranged a hackathon between the SYNQ and DNV GL team, in Oslo, Norway. The goal was to implement and test the key features of the SYNQ API, including:
• Uploading and transcoding videos to different resolutions.
• Implementing the embedded player and verifying correct formats and resolutions according to device, ensuring smooth playback.
• Adding and retrieving user defined metadata. This to identify customer, location, date, asset, category, urgency level etc.
The added video functionality was implemented in 4 hours and successfully demonstrated. The user could upload a video, custom metadata was added automatically, webhooks were set up to notify DNV GL’s backend of events and the video was available to play on all platforms with the embedded player. Feedback from DNV GL:
• Very good onsite support by SYNQ team (documentation, slack channel, staging server).
• No modifications to myDNVGL portal (DNV GL’s backend support system) were required.
• Positive experience among all the participants.
“We are very satisfied and impressed by the SYNQ team and their video API. The implementation process was painless and straightforward, with good support and extensive documentation. DNV GL is excited to continue collaborating with SYNQ and we can already see several use cases for their video API throughout the whole organization.”
